Khayelitsha Crafts

WHERE TO FIND THEM:

The items are available in Khayelitsha. There are many suburbs making up this township. The Khayelitsha Craft Market, with a wide range of products, is situated in Harare. There are a few crafters at the Look Out Hill complex. Site C has the Philani project where weaving and printing is done (they run another similar project in Site B). There are a few tables outside Vicky's B&B in Site C as well, and Beauty's sewing school is situated here too. There is a group of senior citizens which keeps itself busy with beadwork, and operates from a pre-school building in Site B, and Rasta Stone works from his cute little shack, with a wonderful garden, in an informal part of Site B. There is another craft area with little shops at the Zenzele Training Project in Eyethu, and one in Ilitha Park as well. Various artists work from these areas, as well as from their homes, and a group of artists is trying to open a gallery in Makhaza, which is where Golden, who makes the tin flowers, is situated. Bongiwe not only makes ingwinya, or vetkoek, to sell, but assists the youth with dance and drama programmes, as well as with arts and crafts. She can be found at the Resource Centre at Lingelethu.

The musicians work from home, and there is a marimba band which operates from the craft market in Harare.

I am always available to take you to these venues, if you are in Cape Town, to introduce you to the artists at work.
